Gutter Cleaning: Why is it so Important?

  Gutter Cleaning

Gutter cleaning can be an annoying hassle, but with the right information, it can be a significantly less messy and more time efficient process.

Gutter cleaning and maintenance are a very important part of your home ownership. Your gutters are located on the edge of your roof and they are designed to drain and divert rain water off your roof towards the downspouts. Without rain gutters, the water can run off your roof into the walls and even curtains. Unfortunately, your rain gutters can also collect various debris such as leaves, twigs, and dirt. If too much dirt is collected in your gutters, they become clogged up and can overflow, as there is nowhere for the water to go. At this point, gutter cleaning becomes a necessity. Gutter cleaning is not a very pleasant chore, but it is something that has to be done by every homeowner, for a number of reasons.

Importance of Gutter Cleaning

Not completing the chore of gutter cleaning, you could end up with problems that are much worse. You can get gutter cleaners to do it, but you must get it done. Not having properly functioning gutters can cause erosion of soil around the house foundation. A gutter system is necessary in order to divert the rainwater running off your roof so it does not over-saturate the soil right next to the foundation of your house. If the  soil is saturated, you run the risk of getting the foundation moist and wet. Clean gutters guarantee that it doesn’t happen.

If this is the case, rain water can find its way to seep into the small cracks in the foundation. No concrete foundation can be perfectly crack free. Every time water overflows your gutters, it can find its way into the cracks in the  foundation, and erodes it away. Eventually, the cracks can allow the water to seep in all the way through the foundation and leak into the basement. Water in your basement can cause mold, mildew, and various other bacteria.

The picture above can give you enough of an idea of what could happen if your rain gutters are not properly and timely cleaned and maintained.

If you don’t know how to clean gutters, or don’t feel like doing it yourself, hire a professional, but make sure it gets done regularly. It is relatively easy to find oput gutter cleaning prices and all the relevant information about necessary gutter cleaning equipment online.

Gutters and Downspouts: Installation Techniques

Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are the type of roofing equipment which performance goes pretty much unnoticed, until they actually stop working. In which case it will be very hard to ignore the flowing water and flooding that may occur. When roof gutters and downspouts become damaged or clogged up, rainwater flowing down along the walls of the house  may often cause a great deal of damage. At the very least, this rain water ruins the paint and seeps into the cracks, increasing corrosion and decay of the house’s structure and foundation. In the worst case scenario, moisture can penetrate the windows as well as the walls, compromise foundation, and even flood the  basement. This is why it’s important to maintain clear, well-functioning gutter and downspout systems. It’s important to chose the type of commercial gutters and downspouts system which will be able to properly handle rainwater channeling and removal in order to prevent these undesirable occurrences. It is important to learn how to clean gutters and downspouts in order to ensure their proper functioning. Gutter cleaning is an important part of the proper maintenance routine for gutters and downspouts.

How to Install Gutters and Downspouts

Though not particularly glamorous or exciting, when properly installed, gutter and downspouts will do a great job of directing the water runoff away from your home. Regardless of whether you use aluminum, plastic, or copper gutters and downspouts, when functioning properly, they will drain hundreds of gallons of water away from the foundation of your house. This will keep basements dry, protect siding  windows and doors from  back-splash damage, and prevent staining, rotting and corrosion of the walls of your house.

The main purpose of installing gutters and downspouts is to save your house’s foundation and basement from water seepage  and damage. To properly install or replace the gutters and downspouts system, you should take the following steps.

Make a quick over-head sketch of the roof line of your house and measure and record each roof line from the edge of the shingles. Additionally, measure the distance from each of the outlet tubes, and the end of the roof.

Take a trip to any home improvement store where you can easily find and purchase the necessary tools and supplies. Most home improvement stores will carry everything you may need to complete the installation of a metal or vinyl gutter systems, even including worksheets that can help you figure out exactly how many end-caps, elbows, and outlet tubes  you’ll need to complete this project of installing gutters and downspouts.

Plastic Guttering: Benefits and Advantages

Plastic Guttering

Plastic guttering has many advantages over aluminum or wood guttering systems. One of the more obvious benefits is the relatively easy installation process, where any average homeowner can install the plastic gutters without any professional help. Plastic guttering additionally has the advantage of simple maintenance process as compared to aluminum and wood gutters. Plastic gutter does not require oiling or painting and doesn’t get rusty or corroded even after an extended period of time. Plastic gutter cleaning is a simpler process as well.

Advantages of Plastic Guttering

Plastic rain gutters play an important role in maintaining a well functioning, leak-free roof. Plastic rain gutter will prevent water from flowing down under the eaves,  which can compromise the waterproofing surface of the roof edge. PVC plastic rain gutters have recently become increasingly popular among homeowners mainly because they offer a number of advantages over the traditional aluminum rain gutters. Plastic gutters do not rust or corrode, resist bending and denting, and are generally easier to install, since they are lightweight.

Plastic Guttering Installation

The installation process of plastic gutters is similar to that of aluminum gutters; the process will only require some additional tools.

Keep in mind that plastic gutters will need to slope downhill, so at the end of the downspout,  measure  1/16″ for every foot of run and mark these positions. Working from your ladder, begin to install the components of the plastic guttering system, such as corners and drop outlets. When installing the mounting brackets or hangers, make sure to position them every 24 or 30 inches. It’s better to use rust resistant screws and accurately align all of the components with your reference line.

Follow your manufacturer’s instructions to properly snap all the  individual sections of the plastic guttering into the to  hangers, making sure to allow enough room for expansion and contraction of the vinyl, then join the sections with the connectors. You can use a hacksaw to cut all the sections to the required lengths when less than 10′ are needed to finish a run.

Install another elbow and a short downspout section for directing the water flow away from the foundation to complete your plastic guttering installation.

Gutter Mesh: Effective Gutter Guards

Gutter Mesh

Gutter mesh guards are one of the cheapest to buy and usually are pretty simple to install. To install gutter guard mesh, simply lay it over the gutter and press the support clips that are positioned around the front edge of the rain gutter. Mesh gutter guards are basically net sheets filled with holes that completely cover the gutter and get attached to the roof shingles. Smaller holes, such as present in micro mesh gutter guards, are better than larger holes, since they don’t get clogged up as easily. Smaller holes gutter guard mesh will sift out all of the debris that fall into the gutter but lets the water flow down into the rain gutter. Micro mesh gutter guard needs to be properly cleaned and maintained in order to be effective. As with overall gutter cleaning and maintenance procedures, check and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

There are many varieties of gutter mesh guards, click here for additional information and to order high quality mesh gutter guards: http://www.d-fencegutterguard.com.au/.

Effective Gutter Mesh Guards

Most experts tend to agree that mesh gutter guards don’t provide complete protection against any possible dirt and debris that can fall in and clog the rain gutters. One shouldn’t purchase any gutter guards with no intention of ever cleaning the downspouts again. There are no gutters as of now available that are totally invincible or completely resistant to any of the debris of the seasons.

That being said, mesh gutter guards have been widely known to reduce the amount of necessary gutter cleanings. Installing a mesh gutter guard properly will significantly lessen the number of times you’ll need to clean your gutters.

It’s always a good idea to take a inspect your rain gutters, especially in the fall when leaves are falling off the trees. You’ll probably also want to make sure that snow and ice in the winter don’t clog up your gutters. Installing gutter mesh guards doesn’t mean you can forget about taking care of your rain gutters.

Gutter Repair: Don’t let Guttering Repairs Break your Wallet

   Gutter Repair

Gutter repair is not that technically difficult, especially if all you need to do is  to seal some seams that got un-glued. What makes guttering repairs easier ia that you’re working with aluminum. If gutter repairs involve galvanized steel or copper, it’s usually not a do-it-yourself job, since the seams in those materials are almost always soldered. For your aluminum gutter repair, you’ll be using a special type of sealant that works kind of like toothpaste, just try not to get any into your mouth.

Aluminum Gutter Repair

Aluminum gutter repair starts with thorough cleaning and drying the  metal surfaces. Most likely the inside of your gutters is quite dirty and has a thick layer of muck in them. Whenever you need to perform sealant repairs o0f your gutters, you need to make sure the inside of the gutters is perfectly clean before you proceed to repair gutters.

How to Repair Gutters

One of the best tools for repair gutter is a 3-inch paint brush. After removing all of the dirt and debris from the gutter, dip the brush in some soapy warm water and start to dab and slosh some of the  the water into all the tight spaces in the gutter. The remaining dirt and  debris will usually wash away pretty quickly and with a minimum of effort. after the cleaning work  is done, and rinse out the gutter well with clear water. If after the gutter repair it drains well, it’s sunny outside and there is a breeze, the joint and the gutter can be dry in as little as a half an hour. Sometimes you can also use a gutter repair tape. You can use a paper towel to check that there is no trapped moisture inside the seam.  It’s better not to to use caulk, even silicone caulk, since they can and do fail over extended periods of time. Make sure  to apply a generous amount of sealant , since some of  what you see will evaporate. Gutter repair can be done on your own, but if it sounds too difficult, you can hire a trained professional to do the job. Periodic guter cleaning  makes them last significantly longer and function more effectively.

Gutter Protection Maintenance Tips

  Gutter Protection

Gutter protection and maintenance are important for ensuring your gutters’ proper functioning.

Gutters can often easily become clogged up with leaves, dirt and other debris. For proper gutter protection and maintenence, they should be inspected and cleaned both spring and autumn. You can also install gutter leaf protection to minimize the dirt and debris caught in the gutters. You may need to find a way to first loosen the dirt that has been blown into the gutters and then scrub them clean with a stiff brush. Flushing gutters with a strong stream of water such as from a hose, can help clear away all the  materials that ha become lodged in the spouts.

Gutter Protection Systems

One of the effective gutter protection systems you can install is a mesh screen or a leaf-catching system. There are also smart screen gutter protection and rain flow gutter protection system that can be installed. If you decide to buy and install a gutter protection system, be sure to get the type that can be easily removed and replaced when it’s time to clean the gutters. Check the manufactureer’s instructions before installing any gutter system or performing gutter cleaning.

Best Gutter Protection and Maintenance Tips

The slope of rain gutters usually needs to be adjusted from time to time. To test this, run water through them; if you notice that they drain slowly, try repositioning  them so that they slope at a rate of a quarter inch for every ten feet.

Make sure the downspouts spill out the  water far enough away from the house. If necessary, you can consider adding downspout extenders.

If it rains a lot where you live, consider having your downspouts directed into a dry well. The well should be at least 2 - 4 feet wide and about 3 feet deep. There should be underground drainage pipes  sloping into the dry well, which can be effective in keeping the  water away from your  house’s foundation.

Gutters Hub: Types of Rain Gutters, Purpose & Styles of Rain Gutters

        Gutters

There are various types of gutters, all of them primarily are used to drain and channel rain water from rooftops or streets. A rain gutter also known as eaves trough or eaves channel and it is part of a roofing system.

Types of Rain Gutters

There is a number of types of rain gutters. One of the common kinds of rain gutter is an aluminum rain gutter that is usually suspended beyond the edge of the roof  and below its projected slope. There can also be a wall integrated gutter structure installed beneath the roof edge, often constructed of masonry and fashioned as the crowning element of a wall.

Purpose of Rain Gutters

One of the primary purposes of a rain gutter is to protect the  building’s foundation from erosion caused by water seepage. This is done by channeling rain water away from the building’s base. Gutters also help reduce erosion, prevent leaks in basements, protect painted surfaces and collect rainwater for later use. Periodic gutter cleaning is essential in ensuring their proper functioning.

Rain gutter can be made from a large variety of materials, such as  cast iron, zinc, lead, galvanised or painted steel,  copper,  PVC, painted aluminium, stone, concrete, and wood.

Styles of Rain Gutters

There is a number of different styles of gutters used in housing construction. A common type is a  Box gutter, which is a deep gutter usually concealed within the structure of the building’s roof.

Continuous gutters are created using cold forming technology. They come in long individual lengths specifically suitable to roof edge conditions, and can reduce joints along the length of each gutter. These are often referred to as seamless  and come in a variety of  shapes, sizes, and finishes.

They can be equipped with gutter protection screens, or solid hoods to allow the water from the roof to flow through, while minimizing the  passage of roof debris into the gutter.

It is essential to perform regular cleaning, as overflowing rain water can cause damage to the foundation of the house.

Coming soon I’ll be speaking in depth about seamless gutters, vinyl gutters, how to install roof gutters and gutter installation, what are the essential gutter accessories and pricing for gutters and downspouts.
