Gutters Hub: Types of Rain Gutters, Purpose & Styles of Rain Gutters

        Gutters

There are various types of gutters, all of them primarily are used to drain and channel rain water from rooftops or streets. A rain gutter also known as eaves trough or eaves channel and it is part of a roofing system.

Types of Rain Gutters

There is a number of types of rain gutters. One of the common kinds of rain gutter is an aluminum rain gutter that is usually suspended beyond the edge of the roof  and below its projected slope. There can also be a wall integrated gutter structure installed beneath the roof edge, often constructed of masonry and fashioned as the crowning element of a wall.

Purpose of Rain Gutters

One of the primary purposes of a rain gutter is to protect the  building’s foundation from erosion caused by water seepage. This is done by channeling rain water away from the building’s base. Gutters also help reduce erosion, prevent leaks in basements, protect painted surfaces and collect rainwater for later use. Periodic gutter cleaning is essential in ensuring their proper functioning.

Rain gutter can be made from a large variety of materials, such as  cast iron, zinc, lead, galvanised or painted steel,  copper,  PVC, painted aluminium, stone, concrete, and wood.

Styles of Rain Gutters

There is a number of different styles of gutters used in housing construction. A common type is a  Box gutter, which is a deep gutter usually concealed within the structure of the building’s roof.

Continuous gutters are created using cold forming technology. They come in long individual lengths specifically suitable to roof edge conditions, and can reduce joints along the length of each gutter. These are often referred to as seamless  and come in a variety of  shapes, sizes, and finishes.

They can be equipped with gutter protection screens, or solid hoods to allow the water from the roof to flow through, while minimizing the  passage of roof debris into the gutter.

It is essential to perform regular cleaning, as overflowing rain water can cause damage to the foundation of the house.

Coming soon I’ll be speaking in depth about seamless gutters, vinyl gutters, how to install roof gutters and gutter installation, what are the essential gutter accessories and pricing for gutters and downspouts.
